Heeeeeear Ye, Heeeear Ye

We'd like to tell you some really exciting news ... well, it's pretty exciting for us, and we hope it will be for you too! We (that's Caroline Davis and Richard Earley) ...

Who's Richard Earley? Ok, he's this great bloke that I (Caroline) met at college at the start of the year - oh, Caroline tells me space is limited, so I can't tell you about myself after all.

WE'RE ENGAGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're welcome to come and have a sticky beak at the ceremony if you'd like. It'll be on the 25th of January at Petersham Baptist Church (probably early afternoon). Just to warn you though, it might be a bit like Stone Age trying to find space! (See I'm already learning about good Conqueror traditions.)

So, are you excited... ?? (Did I mention that we are??!!)

Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him ... a super callused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Winter Camp Conqueror 2002 – Directors report

Over the last few years winter Camp Conqueror has gone through a number of changes. Firstly the camp was moved from a farm outside of Berridale to the Anglican youth department lodges in Jindabyne. This year we moved the camp from the July school holidays to the October school holidays. This was done, as there is generally a more consistent base of snow in October than in July. The weather in October is also less extreme. On the whole this move proved to be very successful.

The camp began on the back foot as while we were travelling down to the snow we got word that one of our leaders, Mark Hadley, who was part of the advance team investigating the snow conditions, was on the way to hospital with a severely gashed leg following a fall. This tested the remote area first aid skills of those with him. It also highlighted the need to maintain a high level of first aid training.  Unfortunately this left us with one less leader on the camp, especially when Mark was going to give the evening talks.

The change in date for the camp resulted in a younger group of campers as not many year 12s came on camp. Day one was a spent at Spencer's Creek (between Perisher and Charlottes Pass) learning how to ski including falling over, being an ant, gorilla, and duck. For the return skiers tips were given on how to tele and look cool while skiing. Back at camp Dan Webster took on the task of presenting Mark's talks on Elijah.

Through the talks we were challenged in our relationship with God by working through Elijah's ministry (1 Kings 16 – 2 Kings 2).  Part of the talk involved breaking the camp into 3 – 5 groups, which were facilitated by camp leaders.  Themes that were discussed included; aspects of Gods faithfulness; how Elijah lived out the meaning his name (the Lord is God), learning to rely on God's faithfulness even when this is uncomfortable, having confidence in God both publicly and in private and saying goodbye to people who are close to us (as Elisha had to see Elijah leave him).  The bible passages and themes were introduced in morning studies so the campers were familiar with the content of the talk before each evening.  Campers were also given the opportunity to respond to the evening talks and ask questions by submitting paper slips (some with prompts, such as "The biggest barrier to my believing in Jesus is…") that were answered on the Thursday evening at the traditional annual bonfire.

By the third day of the camp the campers (and leaders) had learnt enough skiing skills to tackle a full day "walk". All three groups headed off in same direction to find some snow to try out those new tele skills. The beginners found a great place to eat lunch following some snowplough time trials. The more advanced skiers headed further up the hill to find a "mountain to tame". The challenge of getting back down the mountain was inviting to all with an opportunity to try some serious telemarking. The only casualty was a few egos and Kathleen's boots that decided to part from the soles.

The Sydney Olympics had nothing on the 2002 Camp Conqueror Winter Olympics. Ultimate snow frisbee and snow sculptures were the morning activities. Some great artistic talent was show in both the creation of the snow sculptures and the explanation of what had been created. The highlight of the day was the creation of a "Rark, the ravin' raven" – the morning study mascot. The afternoon was spent doing various races including the Elijah marathon where competitors had to climb Mt Carmel, listening to God on Mt Horeb and racing the chariots.

The great weather we had for the most of the week left us on Friday and we headed up the mountain with overcast skies and intermittent rain. One group stayed within the Perisher Blue resort while the other group headed up towards Charlottes Pass. Dan Vine (John's grandson and Regan's nephew) showed his bush skills by serving "stone" soup with local herbs.

The advanced skiers showed off their skills in the terrain park with grinds and jumps being the norm. Many heli's were attempted with limited success. Jim showed that he is human and crashed many times while attempting 360's.

Overall the camp was a great success. God blessed us with leaders who could take up roles they were not expecting and campers who were very helpful. The talks were challenging and make us think about where we were in our relationship with God.

On a personal note, I would like to thank all the leaders for their support during the camp and the time and effort they put in to making the camp a success.

From January to April??

You may be aware that Camp Conqueror Summer Camp was cancelled last year due to the extreme bush fire conditions and the associated risks.  We understand that you may be concerned about your child attending a bush walking camp this summer. We feel that the risk needing to cancel the camp again is fairly high if the camp was in January. Therefore we have decided to move camp to Easter Holidays, at least for this year. Camp Conqueror Summer Camp will still go on, will still be in the Budawangs and will be packed with just as much fun.

Editor's Notes

Yes fellow Conquerors it's that time of the year again, summer. Ah the balmy days of summer, full of sun, sand, surf and bush fires… err yes well. This year looks like it may turn out to be an even drier summer than last year. So after much deliberation, Summer Camp is moving just a little further into the year, and will be in April. Still the same chunky, chompy, chewie, Camp Conqueror goodness, but with new and improved timing!

Now of course if summer (or early autumn in this case) is not quite your season, or perhaps you enjoy the whole year, then I can recommend Winter Camp Conqueror. Fun filled days and nights in the snow, not to mention you may learn a thing or two. Those that attended this year's Winter Camp seemed to have had a lot of fun. At least that's what I've heard, not to mention the pictures! Which, by the way, should be up on the Camp Conqueror website as you read this.

For those of you who've forgotten or misplaced the address:

http://www.campconqueror.org/

Also over the next month there'll be some rather new and interesting things going up on the website. However you'll just have to wait and watch for that now won't you. ; )

Well then… I guess I'll be seeing some of you at Summer Camp Conqueror. Once again to all those who contributed, we salute you.
